Given the date, I'd say it is a French 1866 Chassepot bayonet. These, though outdated, were still used during the First World War.

Here is one of mine, top and right. IMAG1395.jpg

    French: 1886 Lebel bayonet (L), 1875 Gras bayonet (C) and 1866 Chassepot bayonet (R).

French sword bayonets, like the type discussed, were usually marked on the spine with the place of manufacture and the date. This happened until the adoption of the 1886 Lebel bayonet, which had a quatrefoil blade on nowhere to write the inscription. Swords as has been shown, were similarly marked.

This is the inscription on the bayonet shown in my earlier post.

This particular example was made at St. Etienne and is dated January 1874. These were made at Chatelleraulte, St. Etienne, Mutzig and Tulle. However, it should be noted that some have blades actually made in Solingen, Germany, though they still have the name of a French arms centre as the maker, but also retain their German makers marks on the ricasso of the blade.
