Picked this up today, thought it was neat. These were done by Toriyama Sekien, Inugami and Yokai Ukiyo-e Yamauba. I think those are the titles. These look pretty darn old. Could these have come out of an original book which was done in the 1700's ?

Aww man I LOVE Yokai and these are adorable. Authentic to period or not, I would put these pages on my wall for sure! :vamp:

The illustrations are from the first volume of Toriyama Sekien's Gazu Hyakki Yagyō , first published in 1776. In an 1805 printing held in the Smithsonian these two illustrations do not face each other, but are on front and back of the same leaf.

I imagine there have been many reprints of the book, both in Japan and elsewhere, so it will probably be very difficult to date these particular prints.

    Beautiful illustrations !
Japanese have done demons, ghosts, wild men & talking foxes as well as,or better than most other world cultures.
Though Tibetans,Balinese,Medieval Europeans & modern Symbolists & Surrealists have some high moments.
PS-Re international cinema, for weird-Japanese Ghost Films.Though Indonesia, the Philippines and other E. Asian countries are also effective.I believe, even in our modern technocratic world, many Asians still find ghosts to be a part of life (pun?).

    Love them too, kraft.:)
Yes, they do. At least in Indonesia. You're right, ghosts, spirits etc are a part of life to many Indonesians.;)
Even demons to some people, although those are generally considered rather stupid and can be tricked to stay away from one's home.:joyful: For instance, the image of a demon mask can convince demons that there is already a demon 'in residence', so they move on.:D
