Those of you with good memories may recall this granddaughter clock that we at Casa Ghopper found last year. It was made ca. 1900 and has an E. Howard clock face and movement. Incidentally, my understanding of granddaughter clocks has to to with the height of the case, which is less than 6 feet U.S.

Antique granddaughter clocks are tough to find, mainly because the market was limited more than 100 years ago, and they required different movements because they were somewhat of a novelty. Anyway, we love our granddaughter, but we were not actively looking for another one.

So imagine my delight when I found another one this weekend! This is German-made ca. 1915, modeled after the "bullet" or "coffin" larger clocks that you've probably seen. The strike is called a "bim bam" because it consists of two harmonically tuned metal rods with one tone higher than the other, kind of like an old-fashioned doorbell. Here she is, with Ellie the Boston Terrier making friends. She was a bargain, so we had to make room. But can we love her as much as her sister?

Love the German clock. Drooling over the thought of what the rest of the original owner's furniture was like.

What a provocative thought! Imagine a German household between the world wars, packed with interesting Victorian and post-Victorian furniture by people who really cared about their household, enough to seek out the fun and different to make life more interesting!

An unusual new granddaughter, and Ellie clearly loves her.;)

It still has Jugendstil influence in the design, which I like. Jugendstil is generally less flamboyant than French/Belgian Art Nouveau. With its strong, bold lines it is like an early Art Deco.

I've been long wanting a grandmother or granddaughter clock as I have the perfect place for one in my living room. Currently, I have a six-foot stack of books there. :)
