Who needs the Pyramids of Giza or Stonehenge, when you have this on your doorstep.

    Well 30 miles away.

I went to Scarborough today and took a detour on the way home.

The Rudston Monolith stands at 25 feet (7.6m) it is the tallest megalith (standing stone) in the UK

It's estimated to weigh 40 tonnes and believed to be as deep underground as it is above ground.

Bigger and heavier than any stone at Stonehenge.

The monolith is made of grit stone, the nearest source is Cayton Bay, 10 miles away on the coast.
It was either hauled to this site 6400 years ago 4400BC or it was moved naturally by glacial ice from the ice age.

It was erected well before the Great Pyramids and Stonehenge

A possible fossilised dinosaur footprint is on one side.

The Norman church was almost certainly intentionally built on a site already considered sacred, implying that a stone already venerated was adapted for Christian purposes.
It is believed the Christians fixed a cross on the top and then broke it.
    The church was built 1100AD.

It was estimated to be 28 feet high, the breakage was topped with lead in the 1700s to protect the stone from weathering.

Makes you wonder how many people it took to put this stone upright.

I must point out, I took Buzz in the churchyard with me.

He almost immediately became stressed and did not want to be there at all.

As soon as we left the churchyard, he was as happy as Larry.

Perhaps the Pagan spirits were spooking him.:rolleyes:

I love standing stones, but that is one I have never seen. Impressive size and a very nice shape. Thank you for showing us.

Buzz is clearly not happy in those photos.;) Animals can sense such things, whatever is going in that churchyard.
I have seen them, and they are impressive too.

    Fantastic stuff !
My Brother wants Us to move to Costa Rica-but if we uprooted ourselves it'd have to be for a place as historically rich as the UK or Europe.

Great post, I didn't know about that one but there are 100's of them all over the UK, why Stonehenge always gets the visitors I don't know, most of them you can climb on for free. Here is a fantastic website where all the ancient sites are listed and mapped, all you need to do is click on the pin on the map and it will show info and photos. Maybe the tourists should know about this, instead of paying to see Stonehenge from a distance.

    @Bronwen

“ Why not just have it go to 10, and make THAT louder?”

    “This goes up to 11.”

Ditto. It is also more recent than many others. A stone circle is best experienced when you are alone or with friends, not countless tourists. Although I quite like Avebury as well, maybe because it has a village inside the circle.;)

I like Avebury too :) There used to be a children's program set around Avebury when I was a kid, I didn't like it because it was scary "children of the stones"

You can still 'feel' the circle, even though there is a village inside. Sweet little village too, and I don't mind the locals benefitting from the visitors, it is their circle.

I like Avebury much better than Stonehenge for the same reason, the village is entwined with it.

When I first visited Avebury I wanted to live there. Lovely village, and talk about sacred landscape.:woot: Perfect setting for me.

Well, I visited Stonehenge on my first trip overseas -- 1974!! You were able to walk freely amongst the stones and touch them which I did. Not so many tourists back then.
