This is an odd Japanese piece-seems to be hand painted plastic (imitation Laquerware). It's 9 1/4 inches across & has zero signature front or back.I like the Star Trek Japanese-style of it.
Can anyone out there offer any opinions as to who made it and when, and what technique is this called (painting plastic) ?
    Thanks All !

This is a great example of how photographs can be seen in opposite ways. From the first photo, it looks like a truncated 4 sided pyramid (to me). But from the bottom view it is more clear that it is a 3-sided recessed dish.

I have no idea what it is, though.

Yep Books-The Escher- like optical illusion of the geometry blew my mind too.I've never seen painted plastic before, but then I've never lived in Japan !
PS-It could be a Klingon prop from Star Trek.

An' y'gotta know, & appreciate, that the designer knew exactly how it would confuse some observers; may even have put effort into that illusion. 70's or so, imho.

Lacquerware or faux version of same? I agree with the Klingon styling, btw.
