Hi all.picked this up today and am trying to find out where it might have been made and what it might be intended to be used for.

I see a different design box but with similar painting being described online as French and from the 70s but not sure.
Am wondering has anyone any info, or come across these before.

It measures approx 10 inches in height and 10 inches across on lid

    Thanks as always. 20250424_162615_resize_80.jpg 20250424_162656_resize_2.jpg 20250424_162645_resize_59.jpg 20250424_162634_resize_35.jpg 20250424_162621_resize_20.jpg 20250424_162730_resize_86.jpg 20250424_162720_resize_75.jpg 20250424_162709_resize_31.jpg 20250424_162816_resize_83.jpg 20250424_162803_resize_1.jpg

They did the painting, and then added the hardware. A truely old box would have done the opposite. From the engraving on the hasp I'd say India too. I'd wonder if the painter had family/friends in South Africa. The pigeons and most birds look Indian, but one looks like a penguin! Some penguins migrate to South Africa, and so did a lot of Indians for a while.

Love the birds, I thought Indian as soon as I saw the hardware too.

I thought Indian when I saw the painting of the Birds.
That penguin painting makes me think it is modern at least - for the painter to paint a penguin. Most probably copied from some where.
