Picked this today in sunny Penrith. Not sure of it's origins really. It has an impressed mark on the base. Some lens results suggesting Staffordshire or Dutch

more interesting than i thought on 2nd glance. I wouldn't class as flow blue as it isn't printed

looks more like a tin glazed pottery where the paint has run

theres parts of the decoration that look asian, but the bases seem off for that

    puzzler

I never realised flow blue had to be transfer ware. Learn something new every day. I've found some very similar online referred to as Dutch flow blue but people just make stuff up as ye know.

Well, the blue is flowy, but not typical, and I'm not sure that it's British. It has a sort of folk art design. Is that a mark in the centre of the base?

It is indeed. Some sort of impressed mark.

First, I don't know what it is.

That said, I have looked a bit. There isn't any helpful information in my lone Flow Blue China book (Gaston) that I saw.

I was wondering if it might be Danish and while looking, found a mark for Villeroy and Boch that resembles yours only it's mentioned as a printed mark. I'd be inclined to follow in that direction if I had the time.

Your unrotated mark also resembles a mark shown for Robineau Potttery from Syracuse NY however looking at some of what was produced there, it seems unlikely to me.

Here are the marks so you can see what you think.

    Yours, rotated

Ink stamp believed to be a post WWII mark from the Mettlach factory, used by the Forces Françaises en Allemagne.

    From Kovel's book of mark

That's marvellous thanks. I will take a gander. I did take the photo the way you suggested it should be, but my phone rotated it as per usual. I think I need a writing slope to correct it's slovenliness.

Great sleuthing SIS! The sort of folky design could indeed be anywhere from Scandinavia through Germany Austria and some of the Eastern European areas.

I also struggled to find any similar impressed marks from v+b. The only Impressed marks I can find by them are letters on steins. The ones you have posted is from the 1960s. Everything around this era appears to be printed. Also their patterns to tend to be quite precise the decor on my cup is really loose. The marks do look remarkably similar and I'd like it to be v + b. I just can't get anything to back it up so far though.

Not started on the Robineau yet...

While looking for something else, I came upon this in Discovering Dutch Delftware book by Van Hook.

I don't know that "embossed" properly describes your mark but he does show a similar Villeroy and Boch mark as relates to some of their delftware.

    Anyway, here it is.

I actually had a V n B tile. Bought it in Gloucester in August 2023. I think I posted it on here. It did indeed have that mark on the reverse from what I can remember and it was about 15mm across.

The mark on my saucer looks for all the work like the image you posted above. May well have been a really limited edition they did that has been forgotten about and never documented.

I wouldn't bash your brains out about it too much though. It only cost £3 and may well be worth less.

    Thanks for your efforts.

No problem, I wish I knew.

I do enjoy researching and don't mind pulling from my reference library if it can help.

I love learning about things. I'm always full of questions and love when answers can be found.:)

Hopefully someone will see it and know instantly.
