How large is the sheet? Do you know if it is vellum, or paper. Other people know more than me, but I can say it is a sheet of music... a religious chant. Searching the text may identify which chant.

Where did you get it? Do you know what the surface is, ie paper or vellum? I can possibly see the word Magnificat which could relate to the Virgin Mary’s Hymn. The picture isn’t very clear.

There's no way to tell if it's real or fake with the one photo provided. Close-ups are needed. And can you remove it from the frame and show the back?

    First part seems to be:
[Muro tuo inexpugnabili circumcinge] nos domine et armis tuae potentiae protege nos semper
    https://cantusdatabase.org/chant/517856
    Google translates this to:
Surround us with your impregnable wall, O Lord, and protect us always with the weapons of your power.

The text in this version is
Muro tuo inexpugnabili circumcinge nos domine et armis tuae potentiae protege nos semper libera nos deus noster
And the vid poster translates this to
Lord, surround us with your impregnable wall and protect us with the arms of your power, our God, always deliver us

Qui caelorum contines [thronos et abyssos intueris domine rex regum montes ponderas terram palmo concludis exaudi nos domine in gemitibus nostris]

    Google translates this to
You who hold the thrones of the heavens and the abysses, you look upon the mountains, O Lord, King of kings, you weigh the mountains, you enclose the earth with your palm, hear us, O Lord, in our groanings.

It wants to be a piece of a psalter, or monastic hymnbook. They were big, because there was only one per group and everyone had to be able to read it. No projectors in those days. They were hand-copied and made right into the 18th century if I remember properly. A lot of them were broken up later on and framed.

This is a handwritten page of a so called Graduale in a musical notation called neumes. It is written on vellum , likely made of cowhide (actually a kind of leather).

See this other topic on how it was used. This looks like a 17th century page to me.

The smaller letters are a bit mangled up unfortunately because of your “enhancement”.

I can provide some more pictures. I do not want to remove it from the frame since it is sealed. It is slightly see through and I can tell that there is similar writing on the back side.

It's likely been "sealed" by the framer with kraft paper which can easily be replaced. As above, these typically were made from books which were broken up and the individual leaves sold for their decorative value.

I do not think the reverse reveals extra information in this case.

I was wondering if there was similar writing on the back of the page and Dan was able to answer that question without removing the page from the frame. :)

I got it at goodwill. I think it is Velum due to the see through nature. I think it is from the Magnificat from “Ex Cantico Magnificat” → "From the Song of the Magnificat"
