Featured Georgian emerald paste cross brooch

New acquisition! A Georgian foiled emerald paste brooch in the shape of a Maltese cross, set in gilt metal. This is a large example as most I’ve found is roughly 3cm across.

Sadly the main stone suffered from several chips and I am thinking if one day it fell off I’ll just replace it with a new one. Also one arm is visible skewed, I guess only re-soldering can save that, so I’ll leave it for now. Enjoy!

Crosses are difficult territory. This is a cross 'formée' or 'pattée'. Scroll down this page a bit to see the different sub-types of the cross formée/pattée:

The Maltese cross, also known as Amalfi cross, is very pointy:

Looks like a different shade of green, at least on the photos. Maybe wait?

 

aww thank you for correcting me they are frequently listed as Maltese crosses so I thought that too.

and yes I’ll wait and leave it to God if that stone stays it stays. If it fell off (it’s already loosened and can be taken out right away) then I’ll order a new stone

 

I know. Crosses really are difficult, even for Christians. There are so many variations and most have specific names and even specific symbolism.
