I’ve had very little time for treasure hunting recently with ageing parents to look after but I got out today to a local car boot and found this bowl from a house clearance man.
It’s unmarked except for ‘Total 14.07 Troy Oz’ in wax crayon scribbled on it. and is so badly tarnished I thought it was copper or bronze from underneath.
I’m about to start polishing it but so far I haven’t been able to find anything similar on Google so wonder if you have any ideas.
It’s large at 20cm across and 7.5cm deep with a rounded base.
    405g.
It tests very strongly bright red with acid. It has a roughly soldered on rim.
It be looks to have been shaped by hammering.
    Any ideas please? Thankyou

Great find, Kate! And good to see you of course.:kiss:
I can't help with the origin, but hope marks will turn up while you're polishing it.

Copper bowls have been used for centuries for various purposes . In the 18th and 19th C. they were very commonly in European and American households. My guess yours late 19th. Very nice and a great find.

It looks just like copper but you can see the bit I’ve polished in the last photo and it tests positive for silver,it goes bright red with acid although I haven’t scratched it as I can’t bring myself to damage anything!
I too thought it was copper before my spidery sense made me turn it over!

‘this is what I get for skim reading. Couldn’t detect the “red” through my red bloodshot eyes. ;), thanks for hitting me in the back of my head to wake me up. :hilarious::hilarious::hilarious:

Please DO share when you get through the tarnish.
Even if it's only SP, or 'just' copper...it's a lovely bowl. Thanks for sharing!

If that is 14.7 troy ounces and is Sterling it scraps at £335.31
    If its Grams, its £10.78.

Looks to be planished and has been over a flame, maybe to give it that tarnish look.
I would put it to a buffing wheel with some paste.

    It’s 405g
I’ve got some serious polishing to do so a wheel would be a smart idea.

IF it isn't sterling, or coin silver, but silver-plate; a buffing wheel, unless very carefully used with minimum rouge, can damage the plating. Gently, gently, sister...

An update after the first polish!
I’m still very confused by this
    It’s completely unmarked unfortunately.
It looks a bit like a student piece as the rim is so roughly soldered on.
I broke my own rule and did give it a scratch right up under the rim and it still tests as silver but…..on the solder I can see faint specs of green :blackalien: so….If it’s silver, could the solder have some copper in the alloy?
The hammering looks to have been done with a fair amount of skill but the rim soldered on by a total amateur, why use silver if you aren’t skilled? Sort of points to plated.
Is it plated copper and I didn’t scratch deep enough  Aagh!!
