Years ago I was getting my nails done with a friend she took her rings off to go wash her hands came back & they were gone. We looked everywhere for them, we never found them. Hence I won’t wear them to a nail salon.

I'm talking about engagement rings with high set stones... not my gold wedding band...

& I won't wear my Dads Eilat stone , for fear of it catching on something and being pulled from it's setting...or cracking...

I wouldn't wear an eilat out where it could get bashed either. I love wearing big rings, but big rings and solid cart handles don't mix well. It hurts.

To be fair, I'd forgotten all about it :D

No one claimed it, so on your prompt I got it out and put it on my desk.

With the setting, it weighs 0.5 grams, so if I can get the setting off, anything over 0.2 grams is 1 carat.

I put it between some small pincers and tried to prise the setting away.

Without warning, it flew off towards the wall and vanished.

It was a good excuse to clear and tidy up my messy desk, and then I found it right in front of me, 3 inches from where it had flown off:D

Its pretty well stuck in the setting and maybe cemented too.

Tomorrow I may get a Dremmell cutter on it.

I wear them almost all the time, take them off at home. I do have many wedding bands hubby bought me for past anniversaries, sometimes I wear them.

ooh, my...I'd let a jeweler hand it. You can chip diamonds.

I'll do it myself, I have jewellers and watchmakers tools, vices and clamps.
If I cut the rear of the setting, the rest should fall away.

The setting has severe road rash and is not smooth but the diamond is untouched.

I did some very micro Dremmeling with the aid of a micro vice and eventually got the setting separated from the diamond with no damage.

I put the diamond on my scales, and it did not register.

I then put the setting on the scales and that did not register.

I put them both together on the scales and that did not register.

Before separation, it weighed 0.5 grams.

I need the diamond to weigh 0.2 grams to be 1 carat.

I'll have to wait until I can get hold of a more sensitive scale:D

    Hmmm...

    Carat Size Charts:
    • Many jewelers and online retailers provide carat size charts that visually display different carat weights alongside their corresponding approximate sizes in millimeters or as a percentage of a finger's width.
    • You can compare the diamond's appearance to the chart to get a rough estimate of its carat weight.
    • Keep in mind that these charts provide estimates, not precise measurements, and can vary slightly depending on the diamond's shape and cut.

I generally used a calipers and a measurement chart. It's not exact, but it gets the job done.

If a diamond is cut to correct proportions, the chart works. Off cuts, like a smaller girdle and more depth in the stone throw off the chart a bit, but that stone is of lesser quality. Davey's stone, set in platinum, would be a better quality stone, I am sure.

I did a rough measure with a ruler.

It's between 6 and 7mm, so between 1.0 and 1.25 carats, but that does not take into account the depth.

So I think weight is the WTG

I'm in no rush to replace my scales, but when I do, I will buy some that start at 0.001g

With the usual jokes attached. Those are gem scales, but we all know what they're used for in the wild. :cigar::cigar::cigar:

Better diamonds are cut to specifics-girdle and depth measurements being just two. I imagine the measurement chart relies heavily on industry standards....extra diamond depth is somewhat a liabity...I think you got a healthy carat plus!

it occurs to me that 8 prongs.... is a lotta prongs for a wedding band..

does the 8 , say something in general about the age of the ring..... if indeed this came from a ring.....and not a pendant or brooch...???

When I exchanged my diamond out I was told more prongs for larger diamonds = more secure.

Yes, more prongs, more diamond protection, but some prefer the setting of 8 prongs....still used today on various carat weights.
