I wondered if perhaps anybody here had any bits of armour knocking about? I have a couple of old gauntlets locked away (I'll try and get the key and show them to you later). One is an original, the other is much later, but made from old armour.
Have any of you any odd bits laying around that you might share, age or country are unimportant...................
This is an original Japanese armour that I owned, composite, but mostly ca 1750. Hakutsuru.jpg

Wow, nice! unfortunately, weapons etc from Oceania is another area where I regrettably know far too little about, though I have seen a few spear heads and clubs over the years, though their exact point of origin has always escaped me.
Are there any good reference books on the subject Komo?

I have Oceanic Art by Anthony JP Meyer ... 2 vol... it's extensive... weighs a ton .
I don't have a dedicated weapons book , or know if there is one that covers all the Islands , so mostly auction catalogs , the web... and some hands on experience.

The only piece of armor that I am really dying to get is an early American silver gorget and a nice Native American stone gorget. I was bidding on a good silver one in an auction once, but by the end I was handily outbid.

Japanese armor is really amazing. I certainly wouldn’t turn down a chance if one/ some came up at a great price

Even though the 'Gilded Age' Robber Barons started grabbing goodies centuries after other nation's wealthy collectors-they certainly made up for lost time.
Can't say they ever came close to the British Museum, but the NY Met's still fairly pleased !

The closest I ever got was a Persian Empire arrowhead. Gave it to a friend for Christmas years ago.

Only thing I own is a background prop shield from Deadliest Warrior (circa 2009 :pompous:) that they sent me for free and though it's cool it does not fit my aesthetic at all (I did not pick it). :hilarious::hilarious:

That book is an absolute breath taking work isn't it. I also love the harness on p.160 too, the armour of grotesque masks. Again the detail is fabulous. The Negroli were in a class of their own.

Anybody who loves art and history should find a copy of this book, they won't be disappointed.

Whilst I have seen many images of the Negroli burgonet before, I have never seen those showing the inside of the helmet, so MOS thank you so much for posting that link!
Italy started to harden armour in the ca. 1440's, Germany in ca 1475 and England was late to the party and didn't start until ca.1540. But, once the Italians realised how beautifully you could decorate armour, they largely stopped making the wonderful practical armour of the later 15th century and instead produced these absolutely magnificent works of art. The thing that helps make the Negroli so special, is that it is not just for show, it is still fully functional armour, thick metal and well capable of withstanding blows from sharp weapons. This is ably shown by the Lion armour in the Royal Armouries , Leeds, thought to have been made by the Negroli in ca 1550, though it might also possibly be French. The left side of the helmet just above the visor shows clear evidence of sword cuts, this armour has been used, and not just for parade as so many were! 1623132264_6_-armour-lion-armour-1550-1.jpg

    Gorgeous.

No armour, only a "peurise kayu" or wooden buckler shield from the Minangkabau-Aceh in Sumatra, Indonesia.

The seven stars are said to be for those higher in rank, they represent the Big Dipper. Some other peurise have five stars.
