When will VHS tapes be worth a lot?

Right now, VHS tapes are worth more in recycled plastic than anything. When (if ever) will these things be worth their weight in gold?

Even if 99.9999999999999999999999999 % of all the tapes made were destroyed....& you had the only ones outside of a museum collection....& a working VHS player & screen.......they'd still be worth nothing to anyone.

There are quite a few vhs tapes worth $100+ dollars to the right person. I've seen some go for over $1000. Most are the ones from movie rental stores from the 80's, with the big boxes and eye catching artwork. A large number of the higher value tapes seem to be in the horror genre.

They are even putting out limited edition and "collector" vhs tapes today because the market is growing for them.

    LOL!!

This is perhaps a bit extreme, but I think I agree.

Deterioration of the plastic tape and loss and print through of the magnetic fields would seem to doom them to a limited life.

I have no idea but I think AF is probably right.

How many people do you know that still have a working VHS player? I think our last one broke a number of years ago and we haven't tried to replace it even though we have hundreds of tapes. Everything new-ish is on DVD.

The BBC will pay a fortune for lost TV shows recorded off air.

I still have tape player. :shame: I never converted personal videos to digital. There was an article printed recently on VHS tapes and how they are becoming collectible. I'll see if I can find it.

Correct! There are some worth quite a lot.
I just sold a relatively rare one for $20.
Value also comes for those movies that aren't turned into DVDs.

They are valuable to me..... I watch movies for near nothing to nothing..zero..zip..nada....Ta Da! Even cheaper than Redbox. :)
I recently snagged 168 tapes, a like new small Sanyo player (to be kept on standby) with rewinder and a 3' wide, 6 shelf, lawyer's type Oak cabinet, glass insert doors with white ceramic pulls...all free. This bundle brought forth the $20 tape. :)
When I'm done watching these, and I don't keep any, if I don't sell the better ones, the local used movie place will take them 5 for 1 in trade. :)

Two -- one sitting here responding to the question :shame: and the other playing with the dogs. Not only do we have two "working" VHS players, we still tape present-day shows and watch them at our "leisure" :hilarious:. We also have hundreds of tapes we have taped over the years which are ready for viewing/re-viewing at a moment's notice (yeah right) using DH's "tape library" labeling system for the ones we have kept forever and do replay from time to time.:D

If I watched TV I would do this too.
I also get many blanks free, even brand new, but usually give them to the domestic violence thrift store to sell.
I have a box of someone's personal tapes with kid's birthdays and such. I'm working to get them back to them by vehicle and boat license numbers. :)
I'm guessing they were lost in a divorce and/or storage auction. :(

Oh, and I'm still finding "new in wrapper" VCR tapes particularly at estate sales and church rummage sales. You can't beat the prices because nobody (except us???) wants/uses them. Especially nice to find are pristine condition (still in wrappers) boxed sets of various PBS specials.

The only VHS tapes I ever bought new was MJ's Thriller, 1st release, and a wonderful movie called Baraka and I still have both.

:) I have 'BAND OF BROTHERS' unopened and have never seen it at all. Not worth much though.
I have all the Johny Carson shows also unopened.
I just bought Ally McBeal box set to watch and a whole set on USNavy history also to watch. :)
