I've been told that animals in early photos that are not blurry have value, because of the length of time they had to stand still. Does that include tin types, or is this when it was a flick of a button?

This is a nice looking photo. The dog looks clear to me.

For curiosities sake. Are those markings at the top anything? The back is smooth, that's either added or something else.

    Neat photo.

Just a quick cut & paste for you Snowman-'Because tintypes were relatively light-sensitive, exposure times were shorter than earlier photographic processes like daguerreotypes.Early tintypes required subjects to remain still for 6 to 30 seconds.'
A portrait of a lone animal or group of such w/o their masters IMHO would be worth more, unless said sitters were say a circus clown and his costumed trick dog.

    They do.

I rarely look at men in photos. A guy had a daguerreotype of a mother/father and two daughters. It's very hard to see the image. A double man and woman portraits, his is almost impossible to see. Another man, and two tin types. He wanted $10 each. They weren't worth that (to me). I got him to take $5 each. I didn't notice the men in this, I just looked at the dog. I'm keeping it for the dog.

You could cut the dog out with some tinsnips- he's the cutest one of the bunch .
-Think you'd be safe,I don't think those other two varmints are Butch or Sundance.

I hesitate to say this, but I have read somewhere that the animals used in these tintypes were sometimes stuffed and that's why they didn't move. This hasn't really been disproven. Yours has his mouth open and appears to be panting. I'd think that would blur his mouth some.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

This has a fabulous painted backdrop and props! The dog is cool, too, but the backdrop would also interest some collectors. I know you said you are keeping the picture, but just wanted to mention that.

I can't tell what the markings at the top are. Have never seen something like that. Are they scratched in later, I wonder?

Also, did you intend to include the second picture, the "Philadelphia Hobo's"? That is pretty interesting, too. It's not nearly as old as the tintype, of course.

I would never cut up something that's a century old. I'll keep the guys with the cute dog.
Thank you. I was actually going to make a post about the Hobos. Then I got lucky and found a mention of them in a 1965 paper. They were a baseball team that played for Action Manufacturing back at least in the 60s. The pitcher had won some award for his pitching, even though they lost. When I went to make a post with this tin type, it took me to my draft of the Hobos. It is a neat photo. I got a good one today I'm going to be making a post about. I need help, always.
