Hello all! Picked this brooch up at auction (in a small lot along with a 9ct gold one), I think it's sterling (it took me forever to remove the dark tarnish) and possibly amethyst-I haven't tested it yet, could be glass. It looks handmade to me, any idea of country of origin? Dating to the early 1900s perhaps? Any info appreciated, it's not marked. Thank you!

    strange to my eye.....

that's a lot of work on the back.... for only a mildly competent front..... imo

I doubt the box is original to the item..

Hmm, interesting! I would have expected the opening of the C clasp to be facing the bottom of the design as you showed it. Maybe it should be oriented vertically? I'd lean more towards calling it Arts & Crafts if it's to be associated with a period. May be a crafter's own whimsy. With no marks, I'd say it's going to be hard to ID a country or maker.

That may have been done by somebody taking a class in silversmithing over a century back.

Ditto. Certainly not Art Nouveau style.
    Ditto.

It could be a lapel brooch, as Curioser suggested.
Because it is smaller than most lapel brooches, and given the position of the clasp, it could also be meant like this, like a bar brooch:

    Or a cute little sleigh.;)
