I bought this 73cm square print on woven material recently. It’s in a very heavy and expensive frame. I feel that it is a good piece of oriental art but, although searches bring up suggestions, I can’t find another example of this.

    Any ideas?

Both Japanese and Chinese artists produced paintings on silk, and Japanese woodblock prints were sometimes done on silk as well as paper. I would expect there to be a signature on a work like this, but it may be hidden under the mat.

The wood backing is problematic in terms of preservation, and it looks like the mat may also be acidic. Would you consider opening it up? If so, you might find a signature, and be able to tell if it is a print or painting with a closer examination.

I've seen wooden backings on many Japanese-framed pieces of art. It may also be used in China, for all I'd know. At least it tells us this wasn't made for Target or Homegoods.

A few similar prints out there by Ohara Koson, although not found one on fabric yet...
