Found this at my regular thrift store. I posted on Facebook and was told to have Christie's auction it, but when I tried to get a free auction estimate, when I entered the artist's name George Platt Lynes, a message came up saying they didn't do consignment with this artist anymore?
    Any idea why?
Is this a photograph or a print?
It's dated 1991 by the collector's name but most of Lynes work I've found is from the 50's - is there any way to tell when this was made? (I can't find another exactly like it to get an age)
Still a good find for a thrift, right?!
    Thanks for any information.

The 1st one has the same JER collection as mine.
Think they're a better shot at selling to than ebay?
It's a print of his photograph, right? Can I call it a photo?
    Thanks Debora as always!

I'd market this thru a prestige art gallery or consign it to a 'big time' auction house.Query- Swann Auction Gallery,Sotheby's,Christies- see what happens and have fun. Don't sell it to your buddy out in the parking lot-enjoy the ride this time, you got enough to eat and pay rent ? Let it roll man-this could be a biggie !
PS-Those 3 firms will tell you if it's the real deal or not.

I am puzzled by the black tape around the stamps on the back. Can you tell if they are separate pieces of paper taped on?

Thanks Debora! I think im going to try Swann! 1 question and it seems obvious but I'm not the sharpest crayon in the pack - I started the consign with us & got stopped at whether it's American artist or photographs and photo books?
Is it a photograph or a print of his photograph?
Also, any idea of its age?
PS , I bought these 2 below and almost passed on the nude guy, but the little boxes on the back was different so I added it (thank goodness!)

It's hard to tell what exactly you have from a photograph but... I'd start by assuming it's a photograph and not a print. Why don't you approach the Holden Luntz gallery first? They have on offer other works by the artist from the same collection and should have an idea of where your work fits into the artist's oeuvre. And do be sure to answer the "black tape" question that was posed above.

The edges look a bit rough, probably from the paper it was printed on, and not crisp like the ones in your links. So I'd say print, though I don't know enough about the artist's output on what difference that may make.

I have found a number of Lynes photos (in gallery and auction sites) that say they are stamped on the back with the photographer's name and from the collection of John Edward Rollins. But I cannot find any that actually show the back of the photo with the stamps so we could see what they are supposed to look like. I would be suspicious of the clumsily added labels on the back of Journey's photo. It may be, however, that this is the way Rollins labeled the backing boards in his collection.

Note - Rollin's stamp is pencil dated 1971, not 1991. This might be the date he acquired it, rather than the date of the photo.

I have not found another example of this particular image, which is odd.

Nor can I find any information on who John Edward Rollins is/was.

Agree re 1971 date. And the photographer died in 1955.

I will call & explain and ask if I can email or text photos of it to see when it came out/what it is.
    Thanks

No collector interest in later prints, I suspect.
