Thank you, those are both excellent links and well worth reading by anyone with an interest in early chairs. To quote the first: “The simple legs, arms, slats, and stretchers are typical of small chairs made in New England until well into the 19th Century.”

So as I said initially based on the pics shown: “without something indicating otherwise, I would judge that a 19th century chair.”

As your links also show, there are major stylistic differences that can be used to pin down certain times and areas, and these chairs can still be rather desirable to the collectors of American antique furniture. Many of these more desirable models are seen in your links, which any aspiring collector should study and embrace. But with a chair as simple as the one that started this conversation, one always assumes the worst because these are so easy to make that there are many, many late examples out there.

And thank you for taking part in an actual conversation (i.e. using WORDS)!

    a more recent Navajo take......

which if u read the words.... clearly means I'm not suggesting that this doll is an Authentic Hopi or Zuni Kachina Doll....

( .The Hopis are not the only Native American Indians creating kachina dolls. The Navajo tribe assimilated this part of Hopi culture into their own. However, the solemnity with which the Hopis treat the spirits-as-dolls has faded in the Navajo tradition.)

.(...Like the Hopi, the Zuni originally carved kachina dolls to teach children about their religion's kachina spirits, but began making dolls to sell to railroad travelers starting in the 1880s.)

I never claimed to be a Kachina expert , not here or anywhere....

You said..............Maybe @@komokwa would be willing to check that sellers item http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?campid=5337485078&toolid=10001&mpre=146687102230 to see whether he thinks that is an authentic Native American kachina doll?

Low & behold, I did exactly what you asked me to do......

& what do I get for my troubles........?

    "...
I hoped you could back me up on that, but you don’t want to so I’m sorry I brought it up..."

    Well....... excuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse Me !!!!

I think I'll join @Roaring20s ..... in his subtle sign off....
with my own summery of this interaction.....

    Jeez, komokwa, sensitive much?

First why did I call you out to check the kachina listing - it was meant as a COMPLEMENT because I know you are an expert in Native American artifacts. And since I had learned HERE on this forum that “kachinas” with the kind of decoration in the one shown were not Hopi, and that if it’s not Hopi then it isn’t a true kachina, then I figured I would ask to borrow your expertise to point out that the seller was sometimes fast and loose with their descriptions.

Unfortunately I was remembering the wrong expert, it was taupou, so my attempt failed. THAT IS WHAT I MEANT, nothing more, nothing less.

Can someone explain what I did to piss you all off? I posted a correct assessment of a piece of furniture posted by a user, I got no likes or thanks (except by Whittier, who I will thank here), but a post with misleading information about this antique by our poster who refuses to talk to me for some reason got five likes, including yours. That is why I asked for your help. You’ve been here a long time and you talk about the camaraderie of this forum, but you are calling me a BITCH? WTF? What did I do?

No.... I said ..I'm NOT your bitch !!!!!!!!!

You tagged me for help........... I HELPED.... but not in the way you were hoping for!

maybe next time...don't be so cryptic .....

Oh, and Likes..... did u give me a like for trying to help when you tagged me... NO !

I got....... "you could back me up on that, but you don’t want to so..."

Why do ya mean..... I DON'T WANT TO !!!!!!

I take that as an insult...!!

Some of this thread has been rather prickly and confrontational. That is not the way we want Antiquers to be.
Grievances may be legitimate, but that doesn't mean they can't expressed in a civil manner. That way others don't get insulted or pulled into an argument, and things don't escalate.

    Please be kind.
You replied to the best of your ability. The question wasn't relevant to the chair, but that happens on the forums, so that's OK. But whether the seller's attribution of the kachina type doll was correct, is unrelated to the seller's assessment of the chair. Sellers can be correct about one thing and totally off the mark on another, and vice versa.

Well, that isn’t really true, is it. First you liked a post calling me a bitch, then you “joined Roaring20s ..... in his subtle sign off....” (calling me a bitch) THEN you adding your own contribution that I’m not your bitch. A three-fer!

I did not see any prickliness until I was called a bitch. You’ve been here as a thoughtful knowledgeable contributor, freely sharing your experience with seemingly all comers. When you came into this thread and offered some good links and conversation, I thought everyone was happy. Could you please read through the things I wrote and tell me whether you agree that the attack on me was justified and what I did wrong?

Let’s review. Another member posted a response to me with no text, but simply a video titled “bye, bitch”. That’s a pretty direct message with only one interpretation. So when you “liked” that message you were clearly joining them in telling me that message. Then you added your own text and pic, stating you “joined Roaring20s ..... in his subtle sign off....” of calling me a bitch. THEN you put up a huge sign with BITCH on it.

Which begs my question. If you weren’t going out of your way to call me a bitch, then what WAS the purpose of your three-way call out? Was that your way of complementing me for honestly doing my best to answer a forum members question about what their furniture was? Was that how you think you should talk to another member who has been answering questions about furniture for years? You tell me - what WAS the intent of your three way bitch callout to me?

    I'm not your Bitch.........

refers to me as the Bitch...

    you asked for my help
I helped the best I could
and then you deride me , saying that I didn't want to help you , and back up your comments.

& please don't include me in any 3 way conspiracy trying to put you down..... just because I gave @Roaring20s a 'like' for saying he was leaving the thread !
