    hi folks

2 little bits i found walking around the thrifts today

the glass/crystal piece stood out a mile, stunning and hand painted

was only discussing with a lady about this sort of thing recently (never heard of essex crystal before)

looks very much that type of thing, and from around that time (probably not that lucky though) but don't really know much about it

heck of a find if it is

the little brooch i haven't had time to look at properly but will post when its had a little sunshine clothing, has good signs though (i think seed pearls and coral)

    any thoughts or info appreciated

"A way to test the quality and age of your Essex crystal is firstly by the materials used, the more expensive examples are deeply carved and backed with gold foil and mother of pearl"

the gold foil part is very interesting

We can't see the pin at all, but the little piece of glass is in wonderful shape.

yeah this is a known piece of essex crystal (selling for over a grand)
is it me or is there a simularity in the painting style
(sorry to bombard the thread, but i'm trying to find out myself;))

thanks cheryl, interesting, the closest i've found through those ones is this one so definitely a possibility

    https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/czech-glass-deco-intaglio-painted-tray-salt-horse

seems something very british about mine though, not just the fact its fox hunting but the style of the painting

you've brought my head back to the ground though (and i needed that !!:))

i'm not really seeing anything other than jewelry type pieces in essex glass so that might not be the best sign ;)

Not really just a possibility, it is a circa 1920s Czech (Bohemian) intaglio ashtray, as said, open salt collectors like them. I have at least a couple dozen packed away and have sold more than that (and did also include 'salt' in titles and listings). Feel sure I have some period ads in my files, but it might take a bit to locate them...

Thanks cheryl i was totally dreaming on this one, it was just that paintwork. (should have done a bit more research before)Reading into it essex crystal cabs were made with rock crystal so way way off the mark

    still like it though :woot::woot::)

I like them too - my Mom was a salt collector, and I did her research and cataloging, I've been around them for over half a century.

The ads below are from 1926 and 1927:

never knew that, so they used a glass stopper to crush the lit cigarette out ?

There were also built-in snuffers on some ashtrays, and here's one with an intaglio insert and a snuffer attached to the matchbox holder:

My parents had a silver one. It stopped the cigarette butt from smouldering in the ashtray, and potentially causing a fire.
