I don't think it's a cutter of any sort, or a batter mold. Instead, I think its a pattern for dusting powdered sugar or such on top of cakes and/or cookies.

I think Frank might have the best idea. I've tried using it to make impressions and it really doesn't work. I got it when my Aunt passed away and even her daughter didn't know what it was. My Aunt was an amateur baker and she made extraordinary cakes and cookies and cupcakes.

@say_it_slowly yes it is a cookie mold for leaf cookies it is made by Ateco, I have one. It takes a ton of practice but once you get it down pat, it goes faster. They were sold so long ago, they came with the only recipe that it works with, I have tried many others, but only their recipe works. Typically a stencil for confectionary sugar has details, this would leave a pile of sugar in one spot (meaning it is too large) think of doilies these make the best stencils for confectionary sugar stencil's. They come in a variety of patterns and are disposable.

How does it work? Just press it into the dough?

Yup, it takes a little practice I will usually set up a TV tray & sit & watch TV. I have tried so many other recipes but only the original recipe works. Then you dip the bottoms in dark chocolate. Which the price of chocolate has gone up again. The next time I make them I will take a picture.
