The first 4 pics are of the simpler of these; ~7 3/4" max diameter, ~7 1/4" inner rim diameter, ~1 3/4" high including (non-removable) finial/grip. It weighs ~5 5/8 oz an' is made of silver plated brass sheetmetal, ~0.032" thick.

The following 6 pics are of an apparently similar-functioned piece, 'tho quite a bit more domed, an' far more decoratively finished. It is ~7 1/2" rim diameter, ~2 3/8" high including (also non-removable) finial/grip. It weighs ~5 1/4 oz an' is
made of ~0.027" un-plated brass sheet.

The rims of these covers differ, in that the second one seems to be made to fit over something, whereas the previous appears to fit inside its mating piece (pics 4 & 8).

They came to me together, some years ago, here in Washington. That is the extent of my knowledge about them...I hope y'all can tell me what they designed for, an' anything else that's worthy of comment. Thanks for lookin'!

I'd think the latter. Kept the insides in and let the scent out.

This one shown in a 1931 '1847 Rogers' catalog (they were offered on both silverplate and sterling bowls):

Hahaaa let me never fall into going opposite of Cheryl. This woman has a book and image to back up every knowledge drop! :D Now if only I could be as quick to find my references as she is.... :bookworm:

As a side note, these sell pretty well. I have sold a bunch on eBay.

Thanks for the compliments, but I'm just a silver geek with decades of research under my belt, and still learn new stuff all the time - but will say that if I state something as fact rather than opinion, I can back it up...

That is the most formal and polite throw down I think I ever read! :playful: Warning received! :hilarious:

I can see why! They're so pretty they've almost convinced me I need one. :cyclops:

Hehe, no throw-down, more that without truly knowing it's a fact, I'll voice an opinion or educated guess (or maybe just a random guess). There is so much rapidly spread information and misinformation online that many people feel comfortable in identification on the evidence of sales descriptions, etc., whether it's correct or not. I've always been a reader, so had a small library (now a larger one), but once online, found period references readily available and helpful, though a lot of books also include old ads, catalog pages, patents, etc. Should mention that published references, as well as online informational sites can also have errors and omissions.

Sometimes it takes a while, for instance, over 15 years ago I participated in a fairly lively discussion on the origin of a maker's trademark, and one of my guesses turned out to actually be correct, but I just recently found evidence...
