Featured Hand cut glass Decanter ... it's old, but how old?

The stopper was gone when I found it, and likely has been for a long time. The longer I looked the older it looked. I think every cut is hand done and the top isn't even; no factory machines worked on this. Everything is close, but not exact including the fluting on the neck. It was a whole dollar (!) so I'm out a bit over a postage stamp.

I really like the design on this. Looks old to my untrained eye. :cyclops: Is that an 18. etched on the bottom?

I think you spotted the only clue, Mirana, thanks.

It's lovely and very old, and I believe all of the etchings are original to the glass.

The camera caught it; I never even looked for it. 18. to be precise. Not sure what it means, if anything. I'm hoping it's Georgian; I've wanted a piece of glass that old for yoinks and there isn't any here.

Usually on something like this the glass workers number the decanter and the stopper. That way they can be sure the decanter and the stopper are kept together.

The number makes sense; I've seen it before. Tallcakes found a match but we don't know for sure how old it is. I'm guessing 19th century somewhere. (but 1820 or 1899....no clue.)

I'm with evelyb, 19th century. Probably later on in the century, given there are so many of them. I have also seen this decoration called "Greek key and star".

Darn. I was hoping, but...darn. Glass made before 1840 is scarcer than hens' teeth here unless you're buying $illy money from a specialist dealer.

Sure looks like it. I'd bet the design was used by several companies.
