    Hiya all,
Do you think this is a fountain pen holder. That was my best guess anyway. What are your thoughts?
    Thanks Steve PXL_20250718_201527610_copy_1134x2016.jpg PXL_20250718_201729411_copy_1134x2016.jpg PXL_20250718_201634230_copy_1134x2016.jpg PXL_20250718_201550865_copy_1134x2016.jpg

Yeah the stirrup and horse shoe nails might mean a holder for tack of some type, agreed. It seems a little far spaced and also not a very smooth/steady surface for expensive fountain pens imo but I'm no expert.

There’s this pen stand with inkwell on ebay UK. Since links don’t work the title is: Antique Brass Horseshoe Quill / Pen Stand With Crystal Ink Well

Quill pens are longer so that would mean they would fit better. Usually they don't have the expensive high polish finish that would scratch either (although I'm sure some do).

I worked in an upscale pen shop for years, read trade publications, spent a lot of time with collectors of vintage and antique pen paraphernalia, and I have to admit I’m surprised. I had been skeptical, but clearly it very likely is a pen stand. Perfect example of one of the reasons I love this forum - I learn things!

Would be awesome if the dog was a inkwell.

Looks like a novelty pen stand to me - can we see the WMF mark?

WMF was and is such a prolific maker, producing a huge variety of pieces - this one is rather charming with the Doxie peering out under the pens...
