IMG_6529.jpeg Hi all, please have a look at this interesting jug. I haven’t bought it yet but did negotiate a price (and probably have until tomorrow to decide) Looks to be partially wrapped in copper and/or brass? It has good weight and stands about 35cm tall. Looks antique to me. It has been labelled as a “Mid eastern water jug’ Is that what it is? I did try and search (but didn’t find similar as yet) The base has good honest wear. Sorry I only have this one photo. Thanks for any comments

An interesting and decorative piece. Not antique but vintage imo. The base will tell us more.
Frankly, I don't know. Seeing the finial and the base could help.
Morocco often uses metal mounts on ceramics, but their ceramics are usually glazed and the metal mounts are more decorated than this.
Those repoussé brass bands are also seen on Indian metal mounts.

Many thanks AJ. I really appreciate the comments/info and your valued opinion. I was so convinced it was antique. But as you say it’s still interesting. Not so sure about buying it anymore. I really should have taken better photos and one of the base (sorry) Will do some more searching anyway.

Some more info and better photos. It weighs 3kg. Stands 39cm tall (about 22cm in the centre) Thanks any further comments.

Now, that is cool. I couldn't really figure out what was going on with the first photos. Metal covered terra cotta jug. I have no idea who, where or when, but I know that I'd be very tempted to clean up the metal a little bit. But maybe leaving the "patina" is the way to go.

Thanks. Definitely a cool looking thing (and I like that it has such a good weight to it) I understand the first photo was pretty crappy and didn’t provide any detailed to properly comment on (sorry)

I did get some positive comments and intrest from other dealers (after I bought it and I was walking around the flea market) ‘Wow,that’s interesting’ How much did you pay? At which stall/dealer did I get? One vintage/antique dealer said: “that’s very old’ (whatever that means) He also suggested that I shine/clean it up a bit (I was almost thinking he was about to make me a offer on it)

The dealer I bought it from. Said it came
as part of very interesting lot with some other antiques. He added that he did consider keep it (but that’s not business)

Just to add that I definitely wouldn’t be shining it up. Looks great to me ‘as is’ with the patina

I would give the repousse bands a bit of a rub. Not too much though, just enough to make the squiggly decoration shine and stand out more.

I had a sugar and creamer set that I got in a shop in Portugal years ago. It was ceramic with a green glaze and similar metal bands on the outside. I gave it to my daughter so I can't upload a photo. I always thought they were actually Portuguese, but maybe they weren't. Yours is very cool.

    Sounds like Moroccan Safi pottery.

A tea set and vase from Safi, Morocco. They come in many colours, including green.
