    Does anyone know how old this gravy is? Mid 19th century? Early 20th? Stands 4 3/4" tall and measures 7 3/4" x 6". Underplate measures 10" x 6 3/4".

Well, it was 1863 IIRC when Japan "opened" to the West, so not earlier than that. Turn of the 19th/20th c? Really, I'm thinking 19teens up to 1920s.

1853, when Japan was forced to open up to the US.
The Dutch had already been there for over two centuries, but they were the only Westerners to trade in Japan.

I think I posted this before, an interesting read the Dutch in Deshima, Japan:

    That is very pretty @kraftblue
The design on the rim is reminiscent of Kutani ware.
My initial thought was 20s also.

My thoughts too on kutani. The black and gold accents, flowers and geisha girls.

The mark could well be kutani too. As blurred as it is, the bottom letter has been partially preserved.
