I bought this necklace this morning. I think the pendant is Victorian. But, when I started to look more closely the construction looked a bit odd to me. I really don’t have a clue though. I have a few questions. Do the chain and pendant go together? Are they the same age? Is the back of the pendant supposed to look like that, or was it worked on in some way?
The pendant and chain both acid test as 14k. However, the chain clasp is gold plated. So maybe not original to the chain? IMG_7888-compressed.jpeg IMG_7889-compressed.jpeg IMG_7890-compressed.jpeg IMG_7891-compressed.jpeg

Suspect it may have been a brooch looking at the back with remains of a tube hinge but wait for others.

Perhaps a mourning brooch, the pearls often represented tears, the flowers look like forget me nots and black background too.

Thanks! I did not know that about pearls. I was wondering if the pendant might have been a brooch at one time. The background is actually a blue enamel not black. Could it still be a morning brooch with a blue background?

There is no hardware for a brooch, the 4 "rods/pins" are what connects the center piece to the frame.

I don’t know why the last two pictures were not inserted as full images. Sorry. I can’t figure out how to go back and change the pictures.

Thank you! I love the chain! This necklace is probably my best find ever. I feel lucky to have found it. I will be going back to work next week (teaching) so my estate sale days are pretty much over till next summer. It was a good way to end the summer.
Do you think the chain is older like the pendant? Or was it all put together at a later time?

imo.....the chain didn't come with the brooch...... and likely not from the same region either.

I find the styles to be incompatible .... and think the chain would be from a later vintage.....

The clasp looks like something from the 1920s; my guess is it was added when the original broke. It looks like a lognette or watch chain. The pendant looks to always have been a pendant, but not on that chain. It may have been on a velvet cord that died.

    Beautiful!
I'm thinking the chain once was attached to a pocket watch.

Very sweet pendant, cfh, and beautiful chain.
    Yes, it was a brooch.
I don't associate the blue enamel with mourning. And micro-pearls were often used for flower hearts or around gemstones. I have antique pendants with alternating ruby and pearl flower hearts.

I agree that it is a marriage with that gorgeous chain. It needs a more delicate chain.
Judging from the construction the pendant is attached to, I think the chain was originally a watch chain. A beautiful one.

It's a nice thing. I agree those are old attachment points for a tube hinge. It probably broke, as such things do, and they hung it on the chain.

Yes! What you circled at the bottom was bugging me. I was also thinking it might have been a brooch.
