I picked this up at an estate sale. It measures 6" to a side. It's backed with cork and really seems to have some age to it, with crackling and a bit of discoloration. As you can see from the picture, it' s a doctor riding a horse. It reminds me of Canterbury Tales. Any thoughts? doctortile1.jpg doctortile2.jpg doctortile3.jpg

Looks like a cork-backed tile trivet... wild guess: mid-20th century. :)

It definitely seems to be older than mid-twentieth century, but thank you, everyone, for your comments.

Soak the tile in warm water and peel off the cork, you may have more information.

Must have been a popular motif at the time. The three examples I posted carry three different marks: Thynne, Packard & Ord and Pilkington. Ah, interesting... AI from the internet:

Packard & Ord was a partnership formed by Sylvia Packard and Rosalind Ord, two schoolteachers, in the 1930s in Barnfield, Marlborough, England. They created hand-painted ceramic tiles, initially specializing in commissions and giftware. The partnership later evolved into Marlborough Tiles.
Packard & Ord's tiles are known for their hand-painted designs, often featuring flowers, animals, and scenes inspired by the Canterbury Tales. The tiles are typically 4 inches square and can be identified by the artist's initials (OR) or the "P&O" hallmark. Many of their tiles were painted on blanks from other companies like Thynne and Pilkington.

The style of the writing and the finish definitely indicate a 20th century date

I'll soak that cork off and see what I find. They do look very much like mine, although there is the discrepancy in the size
