As I mentioned before, Ms. G and I scored a few treasures at the recent national historic lighting show. Here's another one. I would date it to ca. 1870. Its heavy bronze with north wind faces on each side, surmounted by a frosted shade. It has a beautiful patina, loaded with verdigris.

One of the cool things about it is that not only does it have a connection to hook it up to the gas hose you presumably had coming from your wall when you bought the lamp, but it also has a smoothly adjustable flame control valve at the shade level. To me it exemplifies the glory of the Victorian period: Evolving technology combined with classically-inspired art. In this case, the lamp's design elements are "controlled" and abstracted enough to justify the label "Aesthetic."

This lamp has never been electrified and it never will be as long as I own it. It more than pays for itself as an "object d' art!"

    Cheers!! 1.jpeg

I wouldn't mess with that either; the design is too elegant.

Finding something like this that has not been converted has to be pretty rare. Nice find!

    Beautiful! The base is sublime.

If you wanted to give it a glow then I'm sure there's a selection of battery and rechargable led lights to choose from.

I'd sit a battery-operated tealight in it and call it solved.
