Old candle holder. Any info?

  1. I found this lodged in a creek bank on our property. We live right across the street from a large civil war fort. Any correlations?

    Pure coincidence, I would think.

This thing has a serious lean and now that you mention "lodged in a creek bank" that certainly explains the corrosion.

What a fun mystery! I'm looking forward to seeing what the brainiacs here have to say.

Oh, and... hola, and welcome to the Forums!

Does the top really look like it's for candles? The body looks kind of like a banquet oil lamp but the top looks like a ewer or something to me. Does it look like it was ever wired as a lamp?

S-I-S - He's posted more detail pictures in the Gallery, but did not post them to the thread. A top down view doesn't show any signs of use for candles and nor anything other than what appears to be the top of a central "post" (which has no holes for wires, pipes or wicks.)

Having no expertise to offer on this item, I'm just dying to know... how does something like this wind up in a creek-bank??

Swept down the creek during a flood. :(

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... yes, that's more reasonable than my ideas, which were...
Outdoor séance disrupted by freak lightning storm, all are lost
Man proposing by candlelight at a romantic creek-side picnic, she says no, he
tosses the works into the creek
Daring burgler loses some loot as he leaps the creek on horseback, pursued
by dashing sheriff who looks like Antonio Banderas

    What?

It's nice, but it doesn't look like any candleholder I've ever seen.

    Those are very pretty!

Looked again at all the pictures and I can't see any place where a handle used to attach. Maybe there is such evidence and it hasn't been photographed.

We also don't know how tall this it.

Yea, dunno. Using my imagination I can imagine a handle slotted into the rim protrusion opposite the spout and in the photo of the side I can imagine a handle base attached to a rough spot on the right side body. No idea if any of those things are possible though:shame:

I have a few pieces of garden art from the turn of the 20th century that were made of pot metal. One of them is a pitcher just like the top of your contraption. I'm guessing it's a made up piece from several different parts welded together.
