the backing is very odd, like its supposed to be a frame

so fingers crossed might ust be damaged glass (though replacing won't be a walk in the park)

suppose the glass and mop could still be joined/fused though, which would make it unfortunate

but the backing/frame could be put to great use for something else

Is that a screw on the edge of the bezel ?
If so, it should be an easy release to replace the glass without causing any damage.

so i don't think the glass will just pop out, as the screws are really doing anything

easiest way thinking about it is maybe trying to get the glass out the front way using the cracks ;);)

You paid 8 pounds for that?

It looks like the cracks are just in the glass. If it were me I would take it to someone who repairs estate jewelry. Having pretty much nothing in it, the repair cost would make sense to me since I would probably screw it up if I tried to fix it myself.

    Have you tested the metal?

Hi Marie, no haven't tested, but get the impression definitely not gold ;) will though just to be sure

i don't think my adrenaline needs another boost after yesterday though :nailbiting:

I don't think it's gold either. The box alone was worth the price of admission. I'd definitely let a professional deal with it; I'd just trash it further and it looks like the fastenings were repaired at least once. Probably what the original owner thought too.

Yea, I suspect gold filled, but it's always best to check :)

If the mop is cracked, I would expect to see evidence of that on the back side, not just the front.

If you are going to try to take it apart it seems the best approach would be from the back, reversing how it was originally assembled - the glass was laid in first, then the mop, then a backing held by the screws as you suggested. There may be a bit of adhesive around the mop holding it in, (or just gunk).

    thanks 2mb

interesting, that makes me think somebodies already pondered it and got down to the mop and hit a wall ;)

the guy i bought it from was addicted to local auctions (i got the impression) so everything that came in his lots he didn't want he had just dumped into 4 big plastic boxes

he had a beautiful japanese ivory netsuke that he only wanted 20 for, but was skint by the time he showed me

i had a bit of a problem like this with an old pair of specs, the lens just wouldn't shift from the back (even though cracked)

the only way i got the glass out was to get into the crack from the front (make crack worse) by creating a little more space then fishing a cracked section out

problem being then (With this).......how would you get another glass front in ;)

so the mop has gotta come out

    It is lovely.
They can fix cracks in windshields, wonder if the same process can be used here?

They use epoxy resin for that. I would guess it would cause some havoc with a framed art piece.

1st interesting revelation, a two part frame.............gonna soak the mop and hopefully george gently it will wiggle out

wondering if this is a grand tour era piece, mainly because of the size and look of the frame

....i think mop is quite hard.....i mean they used to make gaming tokens and such out of it so i'm not too worried,i'get the impression its gonna be cameo thickish as well

I could see the fasteners from here and what looked like solder points/repairs. I just hope you can get it back together.
