I fell for the birds again lol.
This little box is 7" x 6" x 2" has a locking mechanism but no key. Yet.
Multiple shades of maki-e. Gold is so very hard to photograph, I hope you can tell what is gold. most of it lol. I was thinking Meiji period? any thoughts appreciated.

the colours definitely say meiji to me, i've got something very similar but with an old photograph on the top, but box/lock construction is more than similar, think it was 1900-1910....ish

I can't find any boxes for sale online (w/ antique Japanese decoupaged photos)-might be quite rare ?....or I didn't punch in the right Googlie !

think i have tried selling it once (ukonly) and there wasn't much interest, its a bugger to photograph for some reason

you can make the photo look good and the box bad, or vice versa

boxes i always find not the easiest to photo for a gallery pic as you can never cram everything in

Your pics are always top notch. Can you do one closeup of the pic, then ones just devoted to the box form.markings, etc ?

yeah thats the best option, its just that you want all the bells and whistles showing for the gallery pic , but thats not always possible. sometimes as you said its best just to focus on that one aspect or feature

now i've got the exact location, that might help things alot

thinking about it might try selling it in the photographs category, since that is the interesting feature (good idea bosk, you do come up trumps/get my mind thinking about pieces;))

Glad I could help. If you can get a few rabid antique Japanese image collectors competing-that could be damn good !
