Long shot but anyone know who MP or MD might be? Image size 5 x 3 inches. Just blank chipboard back clip frame.
    Thanks.

Can't help, but it is a nice view. I think it is from the Biblioteca Marciana looking out over the Canal Grande, with the columns of the Piazza San Marco and a corner of the Doge's Palace on the left.

Well worth a quid I thought. Another thing to frame though adding to the pile.

A nerdy point, but it's actually the wrong way round. The printmaker didn't laterally invert the image onto the plate. This is how it should look

I’m confused. Did I buy a printing mistake then? What would the printmakers initials be then as I can’t make anything out of the first letter now only the M? Also did they do a flat print of the yellow before laying on the black ink? Thanks.

The printmaker's/studio's initials remain as MP. They'd have been added to the plate. Yes it is a mistake and sometimes happened when dealing with photographic negatives as the original image. Indicates that the print was produced in a studio outside of Venice though, probably a long way outside. I don't know but I guess a uniform tint on etchings must be produced by a flat plate as you suggest - I've got a similar looking etching of Milan and there are actually two impression marks.

I suppose it still works well as an image as it is but I wouldn’t be able to tell if it has been reversed left to right unless I saw the original print.
I have got a print of a couple of donkeys somewhere which I’ll try and find and found another print online that had been reversed.

Haha tbh no-one's really going to notice. In some ways it's a nice oddity. Venetians would notice though. They call the columns Marco and Todaro and if a Venetian says they're between Marco and Todaro it means that life is giving them a really hard time.

Not necessarily. Some artists simply prefer not to reverse the image - especially if working from life directly onto the plate. Whistlers etchings of Venice are reversed, for instance.
