I saw this 1923 painting, unframed and a little dirty, in a local antique shop last May. They wanted more than I wanted to pay, but they know me at this shop and said they would consider trades, depending on what I brought in.

I came back the next day with a box of things that are collectible but that I don't love. I ended up trading two small Clifton art pots, a smallish Navajo weaving, and some cash for the painting.

Here it is on the bright sidewalk outside the store:

It's by Louise Everett (1899-1959), who later became Louise Everett Nimmo. Her address in Los Angeles (today a convenience store) is faintly visible under her name on the back.

Living with the painting for a while, I decided I really did love it and so I took it to the restorer. He cleaned it and framed it. I opted for a smaller frame, since it's big (30"x40") and something streamlined would better match our decor.

I picked it up yesterday, and am really loving it. Might be my favorite thing I've ever found.

Love it too! The composition, the colors, the movement, the skilled and confident brushstrokes - it's just beautiful...

    Reminds me of Sorolla's work.

Superb piece Pott- has the fresh spontaneous energy of Sorolla. I can see how you got obsessed.
Were you worried you might miss it before a trade was made ?
PS-The top full pic (unframed/unrestored) looks lighter than the bottom framed image-is that in the camera/my eyes or in actuality ?

    Thanks everyone!

    For sure!

Yeah, it's the lighting bosko-- the first pic, outside and in the clear sunshine of an early summer day vs. inside my house.

According to Iowa Artists of the First Hundred Years published in 1939, that address was her studio. She and her husband lived at 923 South Hauser Boulevard.

I like it a lot and when you mentioned the size, well, it is quite the statement piece I'd think. I guess I was expecting it to be of modest size.

Yeah it is. It impacts the other things in the room, and makes me need to re-do other stuff. Thats part of the fun too, I think.

True. Whenever something new is added to a room, you have to find a new balance. That takes creativity.

Nice! At that size, it has a lot of impact. Although not abstract, it has a bit of that quality to it. Engages you and makes you examine it closer.

Really like this, but I seem to be attracted to art by women artists. Glad you could make a trade for this. Without knowing anything I would have thought California. You did well!
