    Hi folks

    (cough)

    :playful:;)

found this plastic/resin injection moulded? religious figure

loved it immediately and certainly wasn't put off by its plasticness

the snake did seal the deal though

prices are a thing of the past (paid a charlie price)

    any thoughts or info appreciated

p.s to me she has an uncanny resemblance to a singer (perhaps not uncanny)

also i don't image search or search in general before listing, as sometimes it will put me off posting at all;)

Look up Fontinini. I have a nativity set that looks just this, and that is the name on it. I also have a few random pieces that don't belong with the set, but I love them all. I can't access them to compare because they are put up until Christmas.

I'd think a bit earlier. 1960s-1970s. She's got that elongated Lladró thing going on and a mouthful of pink lipstick.

Several years ago, I purchased some religious statues and other religious items at an auction. They were cheap ($3) cuz no one else was interested. I think sometimes with religious items, people don't bid when the items are obviously Catholic, maybe seems wrong to them if they're not Catholic. Anyway, I plunged ahead even though I had no experience with that type of item. They did surprisingly well on ebay. So I continued to buy that type of thing and always did well with them. The above $3 lot included a Belleek Holy Water Font like you would use at home, a Waterford celtic cross statue and a figurine of the Infant of Prague. Those 3 items sold for $110 with the Infant of Prague statue bringing $65. It was made of pink and cream alabaster and almost 13" tall.

Your statue is somewhat more interesting with the pink lips, upturned eyes and such. It doesn't look like any Mary statues I've ever seen. Based on that alone, it should do well.

thanks Ola, i genuinely find religious items cool and interesting, without feeling fuddy duddy either, so can see the appeal

Seems to me that there is a story about the snake and Virgin Mary, but my brain says "no more info."

The statue refers to the Virgin Mary as the Immaculate Conception, treading the serpent (symbol of the devil and sin) underfoot.

“Mary’s triumph over the Serpent is based on three Biblical passages which have been applied to her: Genesis 3:15…, Psalm 90, and Apocalypse 12: 1-2. In all three passages allusion is made to the defeat of Satan in his guise as the Serpent. Because he was the cause of Original Sin, it was believed that if Mary triumphed over him, she would consequently also triumph over sin.” (Mirella Levi D’Ancona, The Iconography of the Immaculate Conception in the Middle Ages and Early Renaissance, Monographs on Archaeology and Fine Art Sponsored by the Archaeological Institute of America and the College Art Association VII, College Art Association of America in conjunction with the Art Bulletin, 1957, p. 22.)

The Immaculate Conception is the Catholic doctrine that the Virgin Mary was born without original sin (thus making her a worthy vessel to bear the Saviour).

i might keep her as i've been feeling that way myself recently, and coincidence recently doesn't seem so coincidental ;)

Genesis 3:15: I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel.

Psalm 90: 13: Thou shalt walk upon the asp and the basilisk: and thou shalt trample under foot the lion and the dragon.

Apocalypse/ Revelation 12:1-5: A woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. And being with child, she cried travailing in birth: and was in pain to be delivered. And there was seen another sign in heaven. And behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns and on his heads seven diadems. And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven and cast them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to be delivered: that, when she should be delivered, he might devour her son. And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with an iron rod. And her son was taken up to God and to his throne.

Serpent, snake, dragon, and basilisk are all fairly interchangeable references to the devel and sin.

Mary as the Immaculate Conception treads on and triumphs over the serpent. A more complete image would also include references to the Apocalyptic Woman Clothed in the Sun with moon at her feet and a starry crown surrounding around her head.

Just because I like to post art historical images, here is a Flemish (1680-1712) ivory statuette of Mary treading on the serpent--from the Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore, Maryland.
