nice find from the boot sale today (really can get mixed in with some rubbish;)) its 100% right

wondering the colour, not as opaque as most i've had before

    reddish orange with vertical striations

    a particular colour name ?

    any Thoughts or Info appreciated

Maybe root beer? The Bakelite/Catalin colour names are always confusing to me :hilarious:

Not sure what to call that - some sort of amber/rootbeer swirl. i can smell it from here though!

Hi Aqui, yeah it took off a layer of the patina, just as if you were removing tarnish. Has never happened like that before, but won't take that risk anymore

It shouldn't do. Maybe it was the dreaded fakelite from China?:nailbiting:

Ditto. I've never had that happen with a bakelite test. It's just lightly polishing the material which should be solid and the same color all the way through.

No idea what the China stuff does though.

smell is unmistakable, and look is bang on as well

but could be wrong of course (will add that it was the baking soda method tested with)

a few even paler marks on front as well

I know the smell of formaldehyde well. That looks like a Butterscotch color in daylight. Fakelite will give off the smell at first, but it's all in a coating and not all the way through.

interesting thanks evey, i'm guessing by the looks thats almost white at the core, something is fishy so guess it could be the case of fakelite
