3 and 15/16th's inches diameter across the top.
003-CHINESE-PORCELAIN-ACID-ETCHED-MARK-MINI-YELLOW-BOWL-700W-688H.jpg This is the best picture I could get of the mark, and I don't expect anyone to be able to read it. I've never seen an acid etched maker's mark on porcelain before, and so far have not found any other examples on-line.

Just wondering if anyone else here has come across Chinese porcelain marked like this and if it means anything.

15/16th's of an inch height, measuring from table top to rim of bowl.

That is interesting, I've never seen a mark like that on porcelain before. Is it easy to see or something that by fluke you noticed it? I love the yellow on this.

No, it's not easy to see. You have to tilt it so the light bounces off at just the right angle. And, well, I do things that people probably consider strange when I'm examining things in the junque shops. Running my fingers around the rims checking for chips, tilting them this way and that in the light.

I don't think I've ever seen an etched mark on ceramics either

Good eye seeing that mark ... never heard of those on porcelain - thanks for sharing it. Are you on Facebook? There's a group there that may be able to help .... Collecting Chinese Ceramics&Art www.facebook.com/groups/185857384957780/?fref=nf

Are you sure it's etched and not merely underglaze? Can you feel it with fingertips?

If you can feel it with your finger, the signature might be clearer if you do a rubbing of it.

    Thanks everybody:happy:

@moreotherstuff - you did wonders with that photo!

@quirkygirl - I've tried FaceBook, but gave up. It freezes-up and crashes my computer.

@Ownedbybear - Excellent question! Now that you've asked that, I'm re-examining and vacillating back and forth between under glaze or etched.
The whole area inside the foot-ring is more matte and slightly rougher that the glaze outside the ring. I can't feel the marks with my finger tip, but I can feel the edges of the circle mark that contains the text with my fingernail, but not the text marks.
So, it could be a lightly impressed mark under the glaze.

@Pat P - I did try rubbing it with pencil lead. It didn't work to highlight the text and make it stand out, to my disappointment. I think I will try pressing a piece of tape and see what I get.
That's the only other idea I have so far.

In my opinion this is either Japanese or Post Republic Chinese( 50's or so). The mark is similar to the many varietes of the Jiangxi stamps.

However, I don't recall seeing inscribed marks on glazed bases. I've seen carved Chinese characters but they were usually owners names.
