Good afternoon. Wanted to ask for advice please. Bought this sterling silver framed/overlay-ed decanter, as was fascinated by its triangular shape. The mark on the bottom: "Federal Law Forbids Sale Or re-use of this bottle" prompted an easy search that this indeed was a bourbon decanter from 1955 - Old Grand-Dad Bourbon/Whiskey. I saw beautiful copies of the sales ads for the decanter, which was produced seems like in 1952-56. What I can't find is any reference to a sterling silver overlay decanters produced for Grand-Dad. Was it a special gift edition, or is this a custom made bottle, a one-off, made by someone as a special gift?! Not a bourbon/whiskey drinker, so all o decanter 1.jpg decanter 3.jpg decanter 5.jpg decanter 9.jpg decanter 10.jpg f this is very unknown to me. ;-) thank you in advance.

    Very nice!
I would be surprised if it were not a one-off, especially given the single mark. It may very well have been part of a set, either with other matching flasks, or with tumblers...or both, for that matter.
A few pics in an email to the distributors or distillers of Old Grand-Dad would be my immediate choice for further information...I'm reasonably sure you'll get a warm an' illuminating response. Good Luck!

Would you be kind enough to show us the Old Grand-Dad connection? The phrase “Federal Law Forbids Sale or Reuse of this Bottle” was required on all liquor bottles sold in the U.S. from 1935 until 1964.

I'd bet it was made for the distiller and given to sales reps or the like, probably as a Christmas bonus. As Whittier suggested, since they're still in business I'd email them and ask if you know for sure it was their bottle.

on the last photo the bottom of the glass has D-1 mark, which was the mark for Grand-Dad (per web search). also this is the add for 1955 - you can see that the bottle shape is exactly this.

Okay. The stopper is the same too. It would most likely have been a distributor gift. Produced in limited number(s) for top selling distributor(s) as a holiday gift or sales reward. It's unlikely that there's any institutional memory still in the company as the brand has been sold a number of times but you can always try here.

Per your link, I contacted the company. And yes, you were correct, as the company changed hands, all they could tell me was that their collaboration with Regal China ended in the 70es, 80es, and they did not keep any records of the specialty items .... :) No company records to track down why and in what quantity it was produced. Thank you everyone guidance and suggestions.
