Are you sure its copper? And not some other material like resin or plastic with a copper finish?

Where did it come from?

 

It has the look of Syroco Wood to me. Possibly a mount for a clock and the wires just pushed through the mouth of the stag to keep them intact with the piece.

 

A view from the back would be helpful - as well as a much closer look at the "copper."
