IMG_2102.jpeg IMG_2100.jpeg IMG_2103.jpeg IMG_2108.jpeg Hi all,got this cool looking thing today. Got some information with it. Brought in the 70’s in Tucuman. It stands 50cm tall and is 34cm wide at the widest point. (Also the kettle/lamp part can be taken apart from the footing/stand part) Found another one online (but couldn’t read the ad) Just a decorative item that can be turned into a lamp? Is lantern the correct term or more like a kettle? Is (or was) this a widely made item in Argentina or in that region? Thanks you for any comments.

    Wonderfully colourful, and very 70s.
Looks like it is a teapot on a heat thing.
Don't know the word in English, we call the heat thing a 'komfoor', maybe it is the same in Afrikaans.

I found two on Mercado Libre. I think it is likely that it is indeed Argentinian.

Thanks AJ,I appreciate the reply. Yes the colours are great. I know the term ‘komfoor’ well. I would have also described it as ‘kettle or something similar on a standing (maybe for heating)

The seller (very nice lady) however called it a lantern and she seemed very sure of her facts (so it left me wondering) Her parents go it while her father (I assume) was on diplomatic service as a agricultural attaché in Argentina in the 70’s

Thanks for the reply and link Debora. Yes ,it does look similar. I don’t have it listed or for sale ( maybe it’s still the lady’s ad)

It looks like a teapot (or coffeepot?) on a warming stand (AJ's kompoor). I do not understand how it could be an lantern--it looks like solid clay. The only places light could emerge would be through the holes in the stand--just dots of light, nothing to light the surrounding space. And what would be the point of a solid structure (the teapot) on a lantern? Presuming the fire was in the base, the pot would have to lack a bottom for light to enter the pot, where the only perforation is the spout.

Speculation: Could it be a translation misunderstanding? That lantern (a place for fire that spreads light to the surrounding area) was used for what we would call a warming stand/kompoor (a place for fire to heat the pot)?

Thanks for the reply and comments. I agree with the komfoor idea it does make the most sense. Maybe what was initially said or meant at some stage (and then ultimately misunderstood) is that: It could easily be made into a lamp/lantern (like many other of these types of items)

I only found two on Mercado Libre and none anywhere else, so I think it is safe to assume they are Argentinian.
I can see a South American Modernist vibe in the bold design and colouring.
