Featured With gold selling for what it is, your gold-filled jewelry may also have value.

I posted this in the Finds Thread, but I wanted to also post it here, because I was so surprised at the sold price of the listing below.

Obviously, there is value in gold-filled jewelry. This listing strangely does not show the sold price, so I did a little searching & found it in sold listings on Terapeak. They show it had sold for $855.00.

Search for "Lot Of 393 Grams Gold Filled Jewelry For Scrap Parts Or Some For Use 10k 12k 14k". If you are not convinced, search for just "393 Grams Gold Filled", which is what I used to find the results.

I have bought from this seller, & was curious as to what else he sold.

 

Gold just hit $ 5000 CDN an ounce ........ I never even considered this possible !!

 

Wow, Peggy, I did not know that! I've been sorting through a lot of antique jewelry from my grandmother and others and also some old stuff of mine. I always considered GF jewelry just a crack above costume. Fortunately, I didn't throw anything away, but gave a lot of it to my sister to decide what to do with it. I'll let her know that it's now more valuable than we thought.

I had a friend come over back in 2024 because I had a bunch of stuff he would be interested in, & I know I got more than I would have if it had gone to auction.

I had a box of assorted jewelry pieces & parts. Some were not marked, but he had his gold kit with him so that he could check the pieces. He divided everything into piles of 10K, 14K, gold-filled & sterling, so that each could be weighed separately.

When I mentioned the gold-filled items, he said he knew someone who would also purchase them, along with the solid gold items. I really didn't give it much thought at the time, I was just happy with how much he left with (aka - how much was out of my house & garage) & the amount of the check he left in return. I must add that he was not only interested in jewelry, but I had a huge collection of seashells & rocks that he left with & 2 metal drawer units that were going to be a bear to ship if I listed them on eBay.

When I saw what gold-filled stuff has been selling for on eBay, I was very shocked. I might have to go through the jewelry drawers again & give Tom a call.

It is 1/5, 1/10, or 1/20 gold after all. I guess it could be easy to overlook that. With prices so high it does get surprising what a little bit of metal can be worth. I looked at what gram of silver was worth recently and if shocked me. When I was first buying it I wouldn’t pay over 50 cents per gram.

My metal value story…I got taken recently on eBay due to the sharp uptick in silver. It shot up going into Labor Day weekend and I didn’t notice. Someone sniped one of my big silver listings. Even after fees I’ll clear over 500 in profit because I bought well and long time ago but it stung big time. I sat on it until the day I was required to ship and mulled over what to do. I considered cancelling the sale. I kind of despise the predatory practice of hunting metal listings for folks that haven’t quickly reacted to sharp upticks in spot price. I find it a bit slimy and no one likes getting taken. As I sat mulling (and stewing) spot price continued to creep up another dollar or so. I was losing a couple hundred dollars off what I could take it and scrap it for myself. I also hate that it was going to get scrapped in the first place as it was a nice group of things. I had initially priced it where a scrapper couldn’t buy it and profit. Eventually I decided to just take the L and avoid the negative feedback but it really hurt. If I hadn’t already gotten a couple preposterous negatives this year I probably would have voided it. I know one should honor their sales typically but I wouldn’t have felt too bad about cancelling this one. What are thoughts on this? Fair game, or predatory, or both?

Shit happens.... you made the right choice ....... lesson learned , now move on !

 

Sounds like a win-win! Glad you cleared space and got a fair return, plus it might be worth rechecking your drawers.

 

There's a guy at my fkea market that even grabs gold plated jewelry....

 

I would have to think gold anything is worth having. I just can't figure out how to extract gold from computer parts at this point in my life or I would. 20 yrs ago I may have tried it.
