@MTswirls post about his necklaces prompted me to update this thread. Sadly, the jeweler says this necklace is not amber . It passed so many 'tests' I was really hopeful. The one test it did not pass is the UV light test. So @MTswirls get yourself a pocket UV flashlight as suggested! I am going to; the light I used is a 'party' black light, so maybe it wasn't quite the right kind! I think I still need to convince myself, haha!

Not all amber reacts to UV, so flunking that doesn't mean anything.

It’s amber and worth good money.

Yeah - if you're tossing that into the junk jewelry pile, toss it at me!

Hm. I still think it's amber, too.

If it isn't amber, it is doing a pretty convincing job of looking like amber.;)
You will let us know the result of your flashlight test, won't you?

I'm not tossing it anywhere just yet. I still have one more very knowledgeable person I can show it to. I would trust her judgement over the jewelers...will update! And thanks for your votes of confidence!

I've been stunned at the bad/incorrect information I've gotten at jewelers a few times. Definitely show it to your friend.

The average commercial retail jeweller has not a scrap of clue when it comes to stuff like butterscotch amber or older jools.

Those jewellers are not closet testers, we are.:smug:

(= testing with UV light in the dark, some test in a dark closet :playful:)

Actually, I am a she not a he :) I know it is hard to tell with my neutral username and lack of a profile pic! I'm going to buy a UV flashlight so I can put my pieces to the test. I tried using this LED plant light I have, but it was also not the right kind of light for the job

I got a cheap one on Amazon. I am one of those people @Any Jewelry speaks of who lurks in closets to test amber.

    Hi,
You closet lurkers are the most. My favorite are china lickers. To test old Fiestaware from the new Fiestaware lick the back where there is no glaze. The old Fiesta feels grainy and slightly sticks. The new Fiesta is very smooth and slick.

I will probably order one from amazon too since it is so convenient. I will soon join the club of closet lurking amber inspectors :smug::D

I saw my friend today and showed her the necklace. She does believe it is amber! She also said that jewelry store folks don't really know amber and will just think it is plastic. I'll take it to Brimfield in May and see what happens and let you know (it will be a long wait though)! I'm still going to get a UV flashlight :)
