I thought that was strange too but maybe they mean the clasp is 14k rose gold and the locket is plated?

sometimes 9ct gold can be coated with higher carat gold like 18ct, but yes it sounds unusual as 14ct and 18ct are bit close in both purity and colour, which seems unnecessary

    I'm bemused !

Do auction houses test for gold purity ?

    That is what I thought.
We used to have a local one that tested gold. Unfortunately it is gone, and we have no auction houses in our region anymore.:( They had to close their doors when internet auctions became big.

The auction house has a new jewelry specialist. It is a bit odd but it did test as 14K for me and when you look through a loupe at the scratch you can see a rosy gold. On the buckle part the rivot and strap details do look a bit more rose gold vs yellow so perhaps it was more of an aesthetic thing.

I didn't send the clasp to them, I removed it (you're right it is rose gold! but I think around 10K rather than 14)
