Silly question…how do you test for rock crystal

 

gem tester....... or,

compare what you have to , ..

I can't do flea markets any more, and if I could the only ones here set up on Sundays. I was told about one setting up for one day at a local-ish senior center. SUNDAY between 9 and noon. Right when i am permanently not available. Grrrr.

 

First you start with your eyeballs and fingers. Rock crystal is clear quartz. There is quartz out there that's been given a fancy coating (often blue) , but most times it isn't. A lot of it has "horsetails" inside, visible to the naked eye provided you have decent close-in vision. It's also heavier than glass. After that it's mainly experience if you don't have a gem tester handy.

 

I occasionally pick up rock crystal necklaces.
Most weekly flea markets here are Saturday and Sunday.

 

Rock crystal does turn up, but most of what I see if here is glass. Even those are becoming scarce.

I almost never post items here as what I find does not (in my opinion) come close to the quality and interest of all of the fantastic people here. However, today I went to an estate sale where everything was free (yes, you read that correctly) and I found this teapot. At first I thought it might have been an Yixing (it is definitely not) but it is cute so I wanted to share. I love the frog on top and the snail feet. I do have a teapot collection so it has a new home.

 

Love it!

My free pile score today was a box of incandesccent lightbulbs. They're no longer made and sell for $$ on eBoo. I wasn't arguing about the dirt on the box.

Adorable ! Best price ever too ! I show everything I find. Sometimes it turns out to be much more than I thought . Besides its fun to see what others find.

Probably not! It's probably too vintage to actually use.
