I found this at my local thrift store today - it was $50 but the carved head/fave on the top was enough for me to buy it!
Once I got it home & looked at it closely I found a lot of unique things on it I'd never seen before!

    Including -
A label inside it that says
    Antonio Pazarini
    Genua(?) 1738

A carving of a man's face/head at the top of the peg box and the name Richard Waener or Wagner on the back of the peg box

On the back top of the body it has a etching? of a man's profile and FRANZ LISZT

And on the back bottom it has A Madame Alice Borbi (or Barbi)

It also has wreaths(?) running down each side.

Looking up Antonio Pazarini it says he was a violin maker during the period, but his violins are very rare.

What do I have with all the commemorative? If label not real, how old is this violin?

Any thoughts or information would be greatly appreciated!

The German composer Richard Wagner. His dates are 1813 to 1883 so can be earlier than the former.

No. Wagner is immediately recognizable to many people, including opera aficionados, former music students, etc. And, if you do an internet search, you'll learn that, in the past, many manufacturers of inexpensive violins used Wagner's image to decorate their product.

Interesting violin, nice details. Chances are good that the label and mention of Alice Barbi are not genuine though, but indicate a reproduction of an earlier instrument. Your best bet for more info is to take it (and the bow) to a violin shop accredited by American Federation of Violin and Bow Makers - American Federation of Violin and Bow Makers. I'd think it is uncommon enough that a good shop would recognize the maker, or easily find it in their reference books.
    See their member directory.
I found another reference to a Wagner-headed violin, listed as German, early 20th century, at VIOLIN WITH CARVED RICHARD WAGNER HEAD German, early 20th ce in Germany

As Debora said, it is definitely Wagner, with a 'g'. Very famous, and I'm sure you have heard bits and pieces by him, for instance in Apocalypse Now.
He was also Hitler's favourite composer.;)

Franz Liszt was also a famous composer, although of a very different type and origin.

And be aware that the bow might have value in its own right.

And it may contain elephant ivory, which is legal to sell if antique OR (for instruments specifically) made before 2016 with ivory imported before 1990, or from before 1976 for ivory outside the US. However, you must "prove" the age of the item, so in the case of a thrift piece with no other documentation, you have to get it appraised. AmericanOchestras.org has a breakdown of the legalities.

The tip of bow was broken (see pics) unfortunately - it was one of the first things I checked, but it was made with horse hair.
I found this dark...mass in a compartment - is this rozen, like 'rozen up your bow'?
I will look for a accredited violin shop or luthier, I'm sure there's one in Miami or Ft Lauderdale.
Thank you all for the help!

whats the gold emblem(or whatever) on the tailpiece journey ?

i agree all that fraff on the back has been put there to make it look interesting

theres no charm or time taken to have any affection/connection, it just looks phony.

    bow looks buggered

    i would think late 19th/early 20th

It looks like the strings might be worth $10-20 altogether, and are probably from the 1930’s or 40’s.

I’d bet money the violin isn’t from the 1700’s, but I agree completely with everyone who said get it checked out by a licensed expert, and don’t rule out the bow, even broken. Given the price you paid, it doesn’t have to be particularly valuable for a violin to have been a good buy.

Rosin...yup. The rag says so.
AI says..."Old violin rosin can still be usable, but its effectiveness decreases over time as it loses moisture and hardens, a process known as drying out and oxidation." Many sources say rosin may be usable for up to five years but I bet yours is way older than that!

It couldn't be... Richard Wagner (1813-83) wasn't alive then. ;)
And the carving definitely shows him later in life.
My money is on early 20th century for the violin.

Ahh! Funny thing when I did a image search on it, it came up with one similar and the air said it looked like it could be German & it could be a 'lion head' style (like mine except a man head!) - it could tell that by the tailpiece alone?

yeah i don't know what the emblem is, but interesting thats its bringing up similar german violins (which probably isn't a coincidence with the waener head) (i know it s wagner:playful:)

tailpieces are very interchangeable so its still not concrete enough to make an id by...........but interesting ;)
