That would for sure explain the lack of a marking if someone got creative! The stem part was also the only non-brass piece. We definitely plan to rewire. The sockets work just fine thankfully!

Do you have thoughts on if this was put together by a company, or just a very creative person? I wish I knew who it came from to ask them questions.

IMG_0461.jpeg For fun, adding something I DO know the history of that goes well with the lamp. This giant brass pierced disc was purchased by my grandparents on a trip to Indonesia in the early 70s. It traveled around the world, lost in the mail. My grandmother saved all the papers showing all the places it went-Spain and even Brazil! It took almost two years, but finally made it to their home where it was used as a table top in grandpa’s bar area. It was one of the few pieces they kept as they downsized over the years. I always loved it so much, and when we bought our first house my grandma gifted it to me. (Also- the photo instructions worked well so thank you! I finally got it right I think!)

Agree. I don't see any Islamic motifs.

That is sweet of her. It is a beauty. Do you know whereabouts in Indonesia they got it? Maybe Sumatra or coastal Borneo?

I'm afraid grandma didn't include that in her documentation- but my mom would have been young teen at the time of that trip, so she may be able to recall! My grandpa had a huge map in his office with pins in it to indicate all of their travels. They had a goal to visit every country in the world (except those you couldn't at the time for political/safety reasons.) They accomplished that goal, and their house was like a museum. They had a big buddha whose belly you could rub for "good luck" on the way out, boomerangs on the wall from Australia, a huge Korean wall divider/screen, Italian paintings, etc. Truly a magical place to visit as a kid- always all kids of stories that they could tell us from their adventures! Grandpa was a VERY large man, so he loved the countries who treated him like a king, assuming he must be super important if he was able to be so well fed! LOL!

Alright mystery solvers- I finally had time to take it apart. After some google image searches, I am fairly confident this was an oil lamp converted to electric. Anyone know much about oil lamps to help confirm that? I also found the number "43" hand scratched on the bottom of the base as well as the bottom of what appears to be the original oil chamber? The hole drilled into the bottom of the base seems a bit sloppy, so that furthers my hypothesis that this was converted. That would explain the differences in the bottom from the USA parts on the top. On the photo of the top of the oil chamber, there are metal pieces that would not be needed if this had always been an electric lamp. Thoughts??? 1.jpg 3.jpg 4.jpg 5.jpg 2.jpg

Sure looks like it was converted from an oil lamp.

Definitely explains why the top is USA parts and the bottom is not! So the top part would be from 1927 or later (because of the Arrow H&H branding on the sockets) but the base would be older. I'm not sure how much older, though. I am wondering if that means a different type of shade would have been used when it was an oil lamp, although maybe not.
