I see a crown with a 239 and GG underneath. The writing underneath almost looked like scratches when I first looked. Can anyone make it out and why its there? Could it be German? Screenshot_20250926_173806_Gallery.jpg

It's in script. Why don't you try to take a better photograph of it? Or provide a tracing?

I will get a better and close-up photo. After reviewing makers mark it looks like there is LCC underneath the 239 which could be London City Council. Need to confirm what dates they used LCC

Thanks for the info. I do think I see L. FURMAN before the nags head and Stoke after it. But will be posting better pics. Would you know if they use the pub owners name or street address for the location ? I do see an old pub named nags head in lower Stoke. When googling

Some regulars at pubs had their own tankard that was left behind after drinking, they were usually hung up around the top of the bar awaiting use and had their names on.

Elsie Englefield's book (published in 1933, largely as a promotional item for her firm, Brown and Englefield) has an illustration of a very similar lidded tankard, with the comments:

"The articles illustrated on page 73 are cast from the original gun-metal moulds of the firm dating back to 1700. Their graceful shapes, which require no decoration and is their chief attraction, and the soft subdued colour, resembling carefully preserved old Pewter, are at once restful and charming, and in direct contrast to the glitter of highly polished metals, lacquered hammer-ware, and the over-decorated now so much on the market.'
