Just grabbed this yesterday-canvas is 7 1/2" by 9 1/2", frame is 11 3/4" by 13 5/8". Painting appears to have remounted on a newer linen panel-see newer canvas and numbering on reverse .
Done in oil, don't see any cracking-but you can see where a tiny bits of pigment has flaked off.
Any guesses on the artists initials-perhaps 'HKP' ?

Very nice. Orthodox church or monastery, probably Russian.
    Or HKB?
The initials are likely in Cyrillic.

Excellent AJ,that's why the initials have that form- didn't even think of that ! We've got a fair amount of Russian Orthodox in East Portland-I run into them constantly at the Thrifts and Estate Sales.
I'll have to slip a copy of the initials, or photo and start asking around...or-go to a church and ask a priest (along w/ a donation of course:smug:!).

The onion-spired building is within heavily fortified walls...multiple loop-holes overlooking a sloped approach, barren of cover. I would not wanna crawl into that array of bowman's mayhem.
Please see what you can find out about the location an' name of that fortress, Bosko!

The Cyrillic equivalent of the Latin characters 'HKB' is 'НКБ'.
    Here is a letter-by-letter breakdown:
    • HН: In Cyrillic, the letter Н represents the "n" sound.
    • KК: The letter К represents the "k" sound.
    • BБ: The letter Б represents the "b" sound

Hi old friends, long time, no "see"!

will try to help - bosko, your painting depicts Rostov na Donu Kremlin, initials are, as Any said, likely Cyrillic "Н К В" which will be "N K V" in Latin. Could not find a known painter with such initials - searched in Russian. Probably local painter in your area who copied a more famous painter (found by komokva)

komokva's (not his, found by him, errr) painting is indeed the same viewpoint of the same Kremlin, it is named "The dawn is coming. A small street in Great Rostov" by Shcherbakov Boris Valentinovich, Soviet Russian painter who died in 1995:

Thank you so much, Any! I gave up looking for "treasures" - the prices changed here and I cannot afford it :(
But I missed you and the forensic discussions about new-found items so here I am :)

Thanks so much Iva-welcome back and thanks so much for the help ! I hope you don't abandon your hunt permanently- things have gotten very expensive here and harder to find, but I still find things for under $10-this painting was $6.
PS-Sorry it took so long to write back,my Email is not telling me when I get new alerts here.
