I grabbed this pair at the market today. One is in poor condition but the other is fine. No bits missing anyway. They are about 35cm in height to finial.

I can't find any other examples online other than a link to saleroom which leads nowhere.

It's the Cock and Peony pattern check out the following link. I find that, although the market for Carlton is down, large and relatively uncommon pieces like this still sell and I imagine that you should get well over £75 for the good one - not much for the broken one. I sold a similar sized blue carp pattern vase and cover for over £125 on eBay earlier this year.

That's great. Thanks for the info. I got the pair for £10 so was a shot to nothing really. I'm not sure whether to keep them as a pair or to cut the broken one loose. It would just be a shame to separate them as they are a matching pair, but posting two would be a bit of a head ache. It's not just the chip at the top though. The base has suffered catastrophic damage and been glued back together like a jigsaw.

It is crazy looking at what prices Carlton ware used to fetch. Even the rouge royale pieces which I have struggled to get £10 for. I just don't buy it any more. Some of the more unusual patterns still do okay as you said. Mikado and such like. Carlton ware in general doesn't seem to age very well though and it is quite often crazed and discoloured.

To be honest with all that damage I’d just forget it. £10 is a great price for the other. I’ll be interested to hear what it sells for.

I was going to sell them as a pair, in perfect condition apart from one is missing.

I was looking at RCD plates on eBay before. One was described as 'First condition with chip'. Whaaat. So it's got a big lump missing but that's okay because there's no score mark through the back stamp? Sheesh

Ah, CarletonWare Rouge Royale (and I think there was a blue version, too) had its day decades ago. I might still have a piece around here somewhere. When I first got interested in collecting, the chintz craze was roaring. Some things come and go, but like your temple jars, the better stuff -- and CarletonWare has some stuff akin to Wedgwood Fairyland -- will always sell IMHO.

Yes the blue one was rather imaginatively called bleu royale. There was a verte royale too. These two still seem quite collectible, though not commanding the astronomical figures they used to. Rouge royale seems to have suffered the most. Perhaps because it's so ubiquitous.

Funny you should mention Fairyland. At the market yesterday I spied a purple glowing thing. I stalked it and snatched it with both hands. Full of expectation I flipped it over to find the words 'Devon Lustrine'. Oh well. I had a couple of fairyland repro plates a while ago. I had some guy in USA practically begging me to send them to him. I refused as I just don't do international postage. They were very attractive as far as repros go and was sorry to sell them. Maybe one day I'll stumble upon a real piece
