Was at a sale yesterday and spied this half stuffed into soup pot ! I grabbed it,half-thinking it probably Philippine,S. American -cause I just don't see these crammed into pots in garages. I took it up to the sales table and innocently asked about this beat-up old scrap-'2 bucks good ?', and I was gone like a cool breeze ! It's miles from mint, the looped/braided edge looks like it was sliced off and the pattern seems to be flaking, but it's still a good story and testament that there's still stuff out there. 6 inches high, top 9 1/2 inches across, base 6 1/2 inches across.
Thanks Whit-Can't say I've stumbled across too many cheap NA baskets lately...nice kismet coinkydink. "The ancestral lands of the Klickitat were situated north of the Columbia River, in present-day Klickitat & Skamania Counties. In 1805, the Klickitat were encountered by the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Lewis and Clark found them wintering on the Yakima and Klickitat Rivers and estimated their number at about 700." Klickitat & Skamania WA is only a few hours away from us-so it's a somewhat local piece.
Another one for your study collection. Based on the use of simpler "beading" rather than imbrication, and the non-traditional foot on the bottom, I think it may be Salish (Western Washington) rather than Klickitat (Plateau). https://arthurwerickson.com/pages/b...nNROZCj9KgwCJhsXxjNYP9JoQfxSn8gAeaQho4qMLw2O4
Fully Imbricated Nisqually Basket with Crenulated Rim, As 2mb suggests , you have an early 1900's Coast Salish basket. . those fancy rims just have a way of being bust up after 100 years , of less than ideal care !
Nice find @bosko69! Don't you know, I'm supposed to be the one who finds those in our shared neighborhood?!?
Sorry Pot-You did come immediately to mind when I saw it ! You'll find the next one-hopefully a big Pomo Wedding Basket or a huge Apache basket Bowl.
Thanks Komo and 2Many, looks right to me (damn you folks're good !). Erickson's shop is just half an hour away-beautiful stuff. I don't visit much, above my pay grade.
