I have a boxed teaspoon set from my grandmother's collection. this is the first silver item I have had. I had dated the hallmarks as Birmingham; 1922; manufactured by Turner and Simpson.
On closer inspection I have noticed that two of the spoons have a D instead of and E but otherwise they are all identical. Any thoughts??

Individual flatware items are sent to the Assay Office when they are made and receive the Date Letter for the year in effect at that time. The date letter is not static, like the Design Registration mark which is assigned at registration and never changes.

D is 1928, E is 1929. The letter for 1922 is X. Where did you get the 1922 information?

See this table for a comprehensive view of Birmingham letters.

That's a nice set of enameled spoons in a presentation case - you don't mention size, but suspect they're rather smallish, and more likely coffee/demitasse spoons. You've identified the right maker, Bakersgma has already given you the correct dates, and it's not unusual to have different assay dates in a set...

Thanks Cheryl! They are quite small, more petite than a modern teaspoon. They are just lovely.

So does either the D or E appear on more spoons than the other letter? There are none marked X, right?

Believe the OP is saying the '1922' was a typo (though it's a bit unclear) - there are two 'D's and four 'E's, no 'X'es, so set assembled in 1929 or later...

They are quite lovely, and looks like the enamel is in good condition too...

Yes, the X I had thought about was on a cruet set that I also have. Wiggling two yr old boy arriving on my lap is an easy way to make mistakes
